Meeting Notes

At last night’s meeting,6/29/09, I brought up two OSX hints that some of you might find useful. I am posting it here for those unable to attend the meeting.
First: Perian 1.1.3 and iChat AV conflict
Those of you who have the Perian plugin for QuickTime installed should check the version number. Version 1.1.3 blocks you from seeing the person with whom you are trying to have a video chat. They can see you, and the audio is there, but you cannot see them. Fortunately, reverting back to ver. 1.1.2 fixes the problem. On their respective forums both Perian and Apple blame each other for the bug and neither has budged to correct it. And don’t forget to uncheck auto update in the preference pane after you revert.
    Second: Keychain update bug
Somehow during a security or system update a hidden system file got corrupted resulting in the inability of Keychain Access to update when applications are updated. You get the spinning ball of death and only a forced reboot will get you out of it. Here is a link to a fabulous blog on how someone tracked down the problem and supplies a fix. It worked for me and this bug had been driving me nuts for months before someone at the last MacWorld pointed me to this site.
